Dear Parents and Guardians,
I can’t believe we’re already in our 4th week of school! Our students have taken on so many new roles and conquered new learning experiences that have truly challenged them. I am so proud of the work we’ve done together.
Thank you to those families that have been diligent on making sure homework is completed and returned and to those of you that have completed the parent contact form. I have attached the form again since I’m still missing a few. Please take them time to complete and return to me as soon as possible. Email and our class webpage is the fastest and most consistent form of communication between families and teachers. I need email addresses for all families by Friday. Please remember to check our website regularly, http://fifthon3rd.weebly.com/.
I’d like to touch base about homework. There are only 4 students out of 21 that have turned in all their homework since the 2nd week of school. Homework is an integral part of our learning experience and all students need to complete their homework each night. Homework is a direct reflection and practice of what we’re learning in the classroom. This is a means to inform you of their learning and to practice the skills that have been taught. Homework is assigned nightly, except for Fridays, in both language arts and math. These are typically a math practice sheet and some sort of verbal or written response in reading. I post all charts and guides on the website to support practice at home. Students should also be reading for at least for 30 minutes each night with a written reading response due on Fridays. You might create a schedule or routine for your student if you’re having a hard time finding the time to get everything finished. If your student is struggling with homework at home I will accept work that shows 100% effort but may not be complete or correct with a parent note. There is also a homework club on campus from 4-5pm M, T, TH.
DCIS Fairmont and I set high standards for all our students. This is how we’ve started to close the learning gaps that have existed and increased success for our students. A huge part of that success comes from student effort and integrity.
We can do amazing things this year, but we have to do it together. Thank you for joining me in this partnership and the opportunity to be your child’s teacher. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you,
Leticia Austin
