Math and Language Arts have been incredibly intense this week, but equally rewarding. Students have pushed their learning beyond what they thought they'd ever be doing in fifth grade. We've had laughs, tears, and grunts of frustration, but we're "getting it." Our focus in Math has been around Multiplicative Patterns on the Place Value Chart and Decimal Fractions and Place Value Patterns. We will be moving into Place Value and Rounding Decimal Fractions followed with a mid-unit assessment next Thursday or Friday, depending on our field trip.
In Language Arts we have been breaking down the Universal Declarations of Human Rights (UDHR) in our last few lessons of this module. We have broken down meaning and vocabulary by using context clues and word roots and prefixes. Fifth Graders have practiced note taking, jotting down their thinking, Greek and Latin roots and prefixes, summarizing UDHR articles, explaining the rights recommended by the UDHR, and making connections between texts and what they read. They will wrap up the unit a unit assessment next Wednesday.
This year will continue to be just as intense, but as our students adjust to the expected level of rigor they will become even more amazing learners.
Information regarding the 40 Book Challenge was sent home earlier this week. We are working through the rules and components in class. We learning how to make appropraite book choices and how to effectively respond to reading.
Coming up, Words Their Way will be added to our homework and daily instruction rotation. You will get information regarding homework expectations.
Next week is our field trip to the Molly Brown House. If you would like to chaperone please let us know. Have a wonderful weekend.
